Named Pipes Provider, error: 40 - Could not connect; Error 2

I have installed MSSQL 2005 successfuly, checked the services their are running I can connect to the

server with Intergrations Services ok. I get the following when I try to connect to the Database Engine

(provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 40 - Could not
open a connection to SQL Server) (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 2)

What file is SQL looking for (net helpmsg 2)?

Thanks for the help

Did you enable remote conenctions ? Check my website for the screencast which explains how to enable the Remote connections on your instance.

For a standalone PC, you want to disable remote connections for TCP/IP and Named Pipes but you probably want to enable them locally (especially considering that you are trying to use named pipes here). So you should start SQL Server Configuration Manager, then go to "Protocols" then enable both TCP/IP and Named Pipes. To make sure that remote computers cannot connect to your machine -- go to SQL Server Surface Area Configuration -> Surface Area Configuration for Services and Connections ->Remote Connections and turn off remote connections.

That should do it,

Named Pipes problem

We have just installed SQL server on a Win 2003 server. We are getting the
following error message when we try to use it from the 2003 machine.
A connection was successfully established with the server, but then an error
occurred during the login process. (Provider: Named Pipes. Provider error
0 -
No process is on the other end of the Pipe.)
I am a networking guy and I don't know much about SQL (I just set up the
server) The Database guy is asking me for advice.
Next time you ask a question here, mention wich version of SQL youre using.
Check this article.

Named Instance, Connectivity Question

I had XP Machine, with SQL Server 2000 Client
preinstalled.
This week, I installed MSDE 2000 under Named Instance.
After this, I restart my PC, I can see the Names Instance
is up running under Service window.
By My SQL server Enterprise Manager and SQL Analyzer wont
see the instance or any MSDE server.
Then I installed default Instance(no name), then
Enterprise Manager and SQL Analyzer can see MSDE sever
under LOCAL name, I assume this is the default instance.
My VB Data Enviroment can see a MSDE server under my
Computer name.
My Questiona are:
1. How do I login the named instance?
2. can I installed Named instance alone without a default
instance? if not, does the install sequence matters?
3. how to rollback my installation in case I want retry?

thi can be due to
http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;EN-US;814132 ...
there are other undocumented issues regarding instance names not showing up
in the service manager list thought...

> 1. How do I login the named instance?
you must provide the full name as ComputerName\InstanceName

yes, you can install only a named instance, only a default instance, or upt
to 15 named instances and 1 default instance...

> 3. how to rollback my installation in case I want retry?
you have to fully uninstall it... go in control panel and use the
install/uninstall applet...

Named Instance SQL 7 / SQL 2K

We have a server by name TEST and SQL 7 installed and exists a login 'xx'

Recently we installed a named instance SQL 2K on TEST by name TEST\TEST2K

I created an alias for TEST\TEST2K as TEST2K
From TEST, Executed sp_addlinkedserver TEST2K

SELECT * FROM TEST2K.MYDB.DBO.MYTABLE

Server: Msg 18456, Level 14, State 1, Line 1

Is this because of the password difference for 'xx' in TEST and TEST2K '

Named Instance Not Visible local instance visible but does not exist?!?!

I have installed a named instance of MSDE on 4 machines with no problems.
Some had preexisting versions of local which were uninstalled no problems.
On this machine the local instance has been uninstalled. The names instance
installs fine however when you try to connect the named instances are not
visible but the now non existing local instance is visible. Connecting to
ether by manually typing in computername\instancename does not work. I have
removed folders registry values ect with no luck. Any Ideas?

named instance installed no access to perf. counters ?

Hi,
on a server I have installed SQL 2005 Enterprise Edition x64
Its a named instance and there is no default instance deployed.
if I try to access some performance counters, I can't add them. the ADD
button is disabled.
some counters works fines, but others like "Active Transactions" can't be
added while the active temp tables counter can be added.
I think only counters where an instance (ie a database in the SQL Server
instance) option must be selected doesn't works.
I have installed the SP2 and this don't solve the issue.
any idea?
Thanks.
Jerome. Most likely you have installed a 32-bit SQL Server on top of a 64-bit OS.
Check the @.version and see. If you have, you will need to uninstall and
reinstall SQL Server 2005.

Named Instance in a SQL 2000 Cluster

Hi,
When I installed a SQL 2000 Cluster Active/Active I defined one default
instance as SERVER01 and the other instance as SERVER02/I2. Is it
possible to use the second instance without put "/I2" at the end of name
server?
Do I must to install two named instances instead one default instance
and one named instance ?
thanks,
Rubens

You can only have one default instance, the rest have to be named. You can
also create only named instances, and not have a default.
At this point, you can uninstall the default instance. Then, install a
second named instance.

yes, but you can run every instance on the cluster at the default port 1433.
When clients connect to the instance they do not need the instance name when
connecting to the server as long as they use tcp/ip and now the
sqlserverport. Try osql -E -Sserver02,1433 or server02,1433 when
registering the server whith the enterprise manager. When you create an odbc
connection deselect automaticly detect the server port, fill in the port
number and forget the instance name.

|||Hi
Check that SERVER01 is actually a cluster resource. For clusters, the only
way for it to be correct is virtualservername\instancename
SERVER02/I2 is correct, but SERVER01 can not be.

|||Mike,
SERVER01 is a default clustered SQL instance and is the virtualservername. Since it is a default instance, it will work. It does not need an instance name.

Named instance connection problem

Have an MSDE named instance which works just fine. Just installed
another instance of the same and can only connect to it using OSQL
locally, nothing across the network. I made sure to use all the
gotcha flags during install to enable network access, etc:
setup.exe DISABLENETWORKPROTOCOLS=0 SAPWD="sapassword"
INSTANCENAME="instancename" SECURITYMODE=SQL /L*v
c:\temp\msdeinstlog.txt
After the install and reboot, also verified that network access is
allowed using SVRNETCN, where both named pipes and TCP connections are
enabled.
Tried connecting using "sa" and trusted NT auth and both work locally,
but across the network it's always:
[DBNETLIB]SQL Server does not exist or access denied.
[DBNETLIB]ConnectionOpen (Connect()).
No firewalls in the way from client to server. As a matter of fact,
when I telnet to the TCP port shown in SVRNETCN, the connection is
established, so the port is obviously open.
I'm racking my brain on this one... What gives?
Thanks guys,

Starting with SQL Server Desktop Engine (also known as MSDE 2000)
Service Pack 3 (SP3) or SP3a , only local connectivity is permitted, by
default. If you want to permit remote connections to SQL Server Desktop
Engine, follow the steps in the following article:

Named instance and JDBC driver

I have named SQL Server 200 instance installed.
I am trying to connect to connect this named instance using
java application which using JDBC driver ?
anybody knows how can I connect named instance using JDBC driver ?
thank you for timely help
jagdishYou have to use the port number for the named sql server instance:

e.g.

jdbc:microsoft:sqlserver://servername:portnumber;user=XXX;password=YYY

name of SQL Server

This is a very basic question. I have just installed SQL Server 2000 Developer. Could someone tell me please how I find out what the server name is? I have tried using OEMCOMPUTER but that didn't work. I am therefore unable to connect to the server.
HI
The SQL Server name is the computer NETBIOS name (default instance) or [NETBIOS NAME]\[instance name] when you use named instance of SQL server.

MySQL and MSSQL?

Is it possible to have both these products installed in the same system?
And if so what the best versions for each that would be best here? Thanks.

Apache Web Server, PHP all working on a Win2003 server. Now can I can create

Yes. Pay attention to TCP/IP ports, if you do not change them, no problem.
Tune up your server and your databases. Be careful on choosing the server
hardware, remember that it will be a "double database" server and you could
possible find a bottleneck soon.
> And if so what the best versions for each that would be best here?
Thanks.
SQL Server: use 2000 version
MySQL: try 4.0.14, avoid 4.1.x series

MySql

I am setting up a message board on my home windows 2000 server with IIS. I installed PHP and got that to work and now i need to set up a mysql database. How do i go about doing that, i installed the mysql software but im stuck from there.Hello,

after installation you can access every object in the MySQL. Normally the server starts automatically. If you want to create a database or access your datas (create table and so on) use AlligatorSQL at http://www.alligatorsql.com/download/alligator.zip

AlligatorSQL supports also MSSQL7 and SQL2000 databases.

Hope that helps otherwise describe your problem with more details.

MYODBC Drivers for sql server 2005

SO I installed the MyOdbc drivers 5.0 and 3.51 and then went into my Data Sources(ODBC) drivers in my Administrative Control Panel

I then proceeded to add the DSN Under System DSN and I also tried User DSN

When I try to use the import/export tool in my SQL Server 2005 Management studio I don't get presented with the MySql drivers at all for a source

why is this?

Trust me you don't need MySQL ODBC driver in SQL Server to move MySQL data to SQL Server, so tell me what you are trying to do and I will tell you how to do it. Hope this helps.|||

oh well that's pretty much it

The sites php with a mysql DB

I'm making it .NET with an MS SQL DB

So just copying the table data and structure to MS SQL

|||

You can use OLE-DB driver to import MySQL data and table structure if it is not in the import/export wizard look for it in DTS/SSIS, another option is to use OPENROWSET or OPENQUERY in SQL Server to connect to MySQL run a search for all of the above in SQL Server BOL(books online). Hope this helps.

My Sql Instance is gone

Heeelllpp,
My Sql instance is gone from the SQL server manager. I think the problem came up after I installed Mc Afee Virus scan and updated microsoft patches (due to the problems that we have with worms recently).
After that I can't even invoke the service at all. I tried to restart everything (uninstalled the server and reinstall it again) but since the server couldn't be connected, the install process got terminated.
Can somebody help me with this?
thx
gue,
Please supply OS and SQL Server versions.
Is there SQL Server service still there in the Services applet in control
panel? Look for MSSQLServer. Installing McAfee should not remove SQL Server,
however there is the potential for virus scanners to cause problems
occasionally - but this is normally down to configuration issues, not with
the virus scanner per se.
When you say you "uninstalled the server" - what exactly do you mean? Did
you rebuild the OS, or just reinstall SQL Server? Also, what do you mean by
"the server couldn't be connected"?
It would also be very helpful if you could supply the EXACT error messages
you are getting.
