Named Set with TOPCOUNT Not Working Correctly

I need to create reports that contain our top 15 customers at any given point in time. I created the following Named Set using the TopCount function in SSAS 2005:

TOPCOUNT([Customer].[Customer Type-Name-Door Hierarchy].[Customer Name].members, 15, [Measures].[Net Ship Dollars])

When I bring this set into the client (Excel 2007 pivot table), its shows our top 15 customers for all time. When I add a date filter for just 2007, it doesn't update the list to just show the top customers for 2007. It just keeps the same "all time" group.

When I create this named set in a browser query, it works correctly. That is, it shows the top 15 customers for 2007. Is there any way I can get the Named Set created in SSAS to show the correct data based on the filtered date in the client?

Here is the browser query:

WITHSET

[Top Performers]

AS

'TOPCOUNT([Customer].[Customer Type-Name-Door Hierarchy].[Customer Name].members, 15, [Measures].[Net Ship Dollars])'

SELECT

{[Measures].[Net Ship Dollars]} ONCOLUMNS,

{[Top Performers]}ONROWS

FROM Shipments

Where ([Date].[Calendar Year].&[2007])

Thank you.

David

Are you using AS 2005 SP2? This problem has been fixed there.|||

The problem here is because the named set in the MDX Script gets resolved when it is first parsed at which time all the other dimensions will be set to their default members (which is usually the "All" member). Using the EXISTING statement in your set definition should force it to be re-evaluated with the current context each time it is used.

eg

TOPCOUNT(EXISTING [Customer].[Customer Type-Name-Door Hierarchy].[Customer Name].members, 15, [Measures].[Net Ship Dollars])

|||I am using SP2 but still experiencing the problem.|||

Darren,

I tried this but the same problem is occuring. Apparently, the default member of the time hierarchy determines what customer members to return. When I changed the default member to 2007, the named set showed the top customers for 2007. I came across another post which confirmed this as a problem. Does anybody have any workarounds? Thyank you.

Hi David,

It seems that I did not read your full question and missed some information. So, just want to clarify. Named sets in AS 2005 are static named sets, which means that they are calculated just once in the context of the current member awailable at that moment. They are not reevaluated during execution of the select statement. Daren is right in the fact that named sets created in the cube scope or session scope (using Create statement) are evaluated when the CREATE statement is executed, therefore TopCount is calculated in the context of the default member. Sets created in the query scope using With clause are evaluated right after the WHERE clause and therefore take current member defined by the where clause in concideration (this is why your query with WITH statement works as you expect and query with named set from CREATE statement return different results). There are it's own pros on having static named sets (mostly performance), but in your case you should try to avoid using TopCount in the named set, if you want the members on other axis to affect results of the topcount.

Of course! sorry for leading you slightly astray. The EXISTING statement will work if you have a set in a calculation

eg

CREATE MEMBER CurrentCube.Measures.CustomersInTop10Pcnt AS COUNT(TOPPERCENT(EXISTING Customer.Customer.Members, 150 Measures.Sales)

This would re-evaluate the set used in the toppercent function based on the current slicing conditions, which is similar, but different.

|||so is this the solution then?

TOPCOUNT(EXISTING [Customer].[Customer Type-Name-Door Hierarchy].[Customer Name].members, 15, [Measures].[Net Ship Dollars])

or is there another way?

Also, how do you get it to sort correctly in excel, if you pull over the named set it just shows you the top X sorted by the SET Expression, whereas if you do an MDX query it sorts it by the Numeric Expression

Name of User Requesting Report

I have several reports that need a parameter for logon name. How can I get
the name of the user requesting the report so I can use that in a parameter
for the report query?
Thanks for any helpThere is a global value of UserID that you can assign to the report
parameter in an expression. Its value is the domain\userid for the
connected user.
example:
=Globals!UserID
You can assign it to a stored procedure paramter in the parameter tab
of the data set editor. Be sure to use the CommandType of
"StoredProcedure" and not "Text" when configuring the data set.

N UP style reports

Is there a way to create N UP style reports in Reporting Services. N UP
style reports have a newspaper column style of appearance where the same
database column with different data is displayed in multiple columns across
the same page of a report.See if the multi-column functionality meets your need. A fuller discussion
about multi-column reports can be found at
http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/RSCREATE/htm/rcr_creating_layout_v1_4uwj.asp
NOTE: Use must render multi_column reports to PDF, TIFF, or Print Preview to
see them a multi-column. Multi-column reports are rendered as a single
column if you use HTML, Excel, or Preview.

exported. The data is highly dynamic and is viewed/used by our support staff
online (in HTML).
I'll read the information on the link but I'm still interested in knowing if
there is some way to detect the context of a drilldown/row group.
Thanks,

but is there a way to overide the "snaking" behavior that is discussed ?
Crystal allows you to specify whether data for these types of reports is
displayed down the page or across the page.
When converting reports from Cyrstal to SRS, it is important to make them
look exactly the same to improve my organization's confidence in SRS. Most
people will see this as a limitation of SRS.

MySQL 5.0 Views wont work with crystal reports

I can access my view data through the application, but when i try to create the report in crytal reports and set up the database through an odbc driver 3.51.

If i click on a normal table its fine, but with the views it says

"Error Opening File: There are no fields in the file: "[View name]".Hi,

I've got a similar problem but using a stored proc. (See earlier posting for more info)

After much hair-pulling and soul searching i think that their might be a compatibility problem with MySQL5, MyODBC 3.51 and Crystal.

Have you tried MyODBC 5.0 yet? If it installs and works on yr side that might take yr problem away. And if it does, please let us know what you did cause it dont wanna install here.

Thanks and good luck|||Thanks

I have tried the 5.0 ODBC Connector, but unfortunatly i had no joy. Still the same error.

'My Reports' folder not being created for some users

Hi,
I was just nosing around the DB, and I noticed that all the users are in the
'users' table, but the user accounts don't appear in the 'PolicyUserRole'
table, and hence there are not any policies for them.
I don't know if this helps any or just confuses...
And there aren't any application events in the log on the server, either.

Thanks for the reply but if the user can't see the folder, how can they
browse to it? As is explained further on in the text, some users seem to
get them created automatically, while others don't. So I need either a way
to create the folder manually (some SQL?) or an explanation of the user
differences as to why a folder would be created for one user but not for
another...
Thanks,

'My Reports', even if it has not been created for that user. That is why it
will show up in Report Manager. The first time a user calls any soap method
that uses the My Reports folder, RS will create the corresponding folder in
the user directory that the My Reports folder points to. If you have each
user just call ListChildren on '/My Reports' then each user will have the
'My Reports' folder created.

Thanks for the reply, but I don't understand how to get each user to call
this method...
** a few minutes pass ...**
Ok, here is what I did to get it to work:
I logged in as a user that had a working 'My Reports' folder
I copied the URL
(http://webstats.co.uk/Reports/Pages/Folder.aspx?ItemPath=%2fMy+Reports&IsDe
tailsView=False)
I then logged in as a user that was having a problem
I then pasted the preceeding URL and loaded it.
Then using the admin user, put some reports into the 'My Reports' folder of
the problem user.
And, voila! Now they have their own 'My Reports' folder! Woo hoo!
Thanks for the help,
Lance

folder and this will cause their My Reports folder to be created.

My Reports folder is invisible

I am trying to locate the "My Reports" folder on the SSRS site, but I dont think I am able to see it. I am an admin on the box with Browser, Content Manager, My Reports roles.

I also tried creating the folder manually and it says the folder exists but I cant see it.

I have also checked on the "Site Settings" and checked the box "Enable My Reports". What else am I missing here?

Thanks,

sj

If you click on the "Show Details" button, are the folders showing? Make sure that they are not hidden.|||Yes I tried that too but no luck

My reports folder

How to rename the "My reports" folder. My browser language is in french and
user are speaking french. The report manager only show "My reports" but I
want to see "Mes rapports"
I know that is the "listChildren" method that add My report. Is there a way
to change this?We simply made an .aspx (or it could even be an html) page as the
starting-page for the users with an url-link to their "my reports" content

this, or that the localization should be automatic if the OS hosting the
report server is localized to French:
http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa972255(SQL.80).aspx -- while this
page may be outdated, there is a similar set of paragraphs in BOL for 2005.
I quote:
A few items are always articulated in the language that corresponds to the
operating system language setting, regardless of client application locale.
The following table describes these items.
Predefined roles
Reporting Services installs with several predefined roles (Browser,
Publisher, Content Manager, My Reports, System Administrator, and System
User) that are articulated in the language resource of the operating system
that runs the report server.
Users folder, and My Reports folder
These folder names are reserved when the My Reports feature is enabled. This
feature requires a fixed folder structure. Because the report server manages
reserved names, reserved folder names are articulated in the language
resource of the operating system that runs the report server.

So... what is the regional setting of the OS, in your case?

My Reports folder

Hi everyone,
I reinsralled my reporting services (on sql 2000) and i have a problem:
i added users and if one user create folder everyone else can see his
folder. also the my reports folder is not created auto like it was.
cant i create a folder that only i can see?
thanksThe folder that all of the My Reports are in is Users... If everyone can
see this, then either everyone is an administrator, or you need to reduce the
permissions on the Users folder.
To have the My Reports folders created automatically you must
Check the Enable My Reports box from the SIte Settings menu item on the top
left of Report Manager. There you can also setup the permissions that
individuals have on their My Reports folder.
Hope this helps

My Query

Hello!
Can any one help me solve this??
I am using MS SQL 2000 database for developing crystal reports for my company.
Now in this I am doing as follows:
I want to concate "dataset_" string with End_A--which is a column name in one table.(Result is like "dataset_1464")I am storing this result in a variable A.
And,now result of this query (A) is name of one table in same database.
Can I use this result ,i.e. A to get MM, which is a column in A.
Here I want to use A instead of dataset_1464.
Please help me if its possible.
thanks in advance,
chandreshselect @.var1 = 'dataset_'+convert(varchar(30),END_A) from table_A

sp_executesql ('select mm from '+@.var1)|||select @.var1 = 'dataset_'+convert(varchar(30),END_A) from table_A

sp_executesql ('select mm from '+@.var1)

HI Thanks alot for prompt reply...
I used this method but it still gives me error like:
Server: Msg 170, Level 15, State 1, Line 4
Line 4: Incorrect syntax near 'select mm from '.

wht colud be the reason???
thanks (again) in advance..

My primitive questions

I want to cerate printable reports and they must be in certain format , I don't have any experience in neither "Crystal reports" and "Reporting services" I wanted to make them by "Crystal reports" but it is very confusing ! so some one advice me to use "Reporting services" and I want to make sure that"Reporting services" can give me what I need befor I start to learn it seriously .

My first question is can I use "Reporting services" with a sql server data base on an ordinary web hosting?

Then I need extremely formatted prints of those reports rather in a web based application. Can "Reporting services" give me web based print like something we have in crystal reports ?

And last question is : where to start learning"Reporting services" fast ?

Thank you in advance .

Have a look at the following:

http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-gb/sql/aa336316.aspx (SQL Server 2005 Reporting Services has many tutorials)|||

Thank you for links despite I saw them before but Dude give me some basic information before make me to read every thingJ

Please somebody answer my question with yes or no

Thank you .

If you have SQL Server with the reporting services component plus the web viewer control.

SSRS can output a number of formats including PDF.
