Named Set with TOPCOUNT Not Working Correctly

I need to create reports that contain our top 15 customers at any given point in time. I created the following Named Set using the TopCount function in SSAS 2005:

TOPCOUNT([Customer].[Customer Type-Name-Door Hierarchy].[Customer Name].members, 15, [Measures].[Net Ship Dollars])

When I bring this set into the client (Excel 2007 pivot table), its shows our top 15 customers for all time. When I add a date filter for just 2007, it doesn't update the list to just show the top customers for 2007. It just keeps the same "all time" group.

When I create this named set in a browser query, it works correctly. That is, it shows the top 15 customers for 2007. Is there any way I can get the Named Set created in SSAS to show the correct data based on the filtered date in the client?

Here is the browser query:

WITHSET

[Top Performers]

AS

'TOPCOUNT([Customer].[Customer Type-Name-Door Hierarchy].[Customer Name].members, 15, [Measures].[Net Ship Dollars])'

SELECT

{[Measures].[Net Ship Dollars]} ONCOLUMNS,

{[Top Performers]}ONROWS

FROM Shipments

Where ([Date].[Calendar Year].&[2007])

Thank you.

David

Are you using AS 2005 SP2? This problem has been fixed there.|||

The problem here is because the named set in the MDX Script gets resolved when it is first parsed at which time all the other dimensions will be set to their default members (which is usually the "All" member). Using the EXISTING statement in your set definition should force it to be re-evaluated with the current context each time it is used.

eg

TOPCOUNT(EXISTING [Customer].[Customer Type-Name-Door Hierarchy].[Customer Name].members, 15, [Measures].[Net Ship Dollars])

|||I am using SP2 but still experiencing the problem.|||

Darren,

I tried this but the same problem is occuring. Apparently, the default member of the time hierarchy determines what customer members to return. When I changed the default member to 2007, the named set showed the top customers for 2007. I came across another post which confirmed this as a problem. Does anybody have any workarounds? Thyank you.

Hi David,

It seems that I did not read your full question and missed some information. So, just want to clarify. Named sets in AS 2005 are static named sets, which means that they are calculated just once in the context of the current member awailable at that moment. They are not reevaluated during execution of the select statement. Daren is right in the fact that named sets created in the cube scope or session scope (using Create statement) are evaluated when the CREATE statement is executed, therefore TopCount is calculated in the context of the default member. Sets created in the query scope using With clause are evaluated right after the WHERE clause and therefore take current member defined by the where clause in concideration (this is why your query with WITH statement works as you expect and query with named set from CREATE statement return different results). There are it's own pros on having static named sets (mostly performance), but in your case you should try to avoid using TopCount in the named set, if you want the members on other axis to affect results of the topcount.

Of course! sorry for leading you slightly astray. The EXISTING statement will work if you have a set in a calculation

eg

CREATE MEMBER CurrentCube.Measures.CustomersInTop10Pcnt AS COUNT(TOPPERCENT(EXISTING Customer.Customer.Members, 150 Measures.Sales)

This would re-evaluate the set used in the toppercent function based on the current slicing conditions, which is similar, but different.

|||so is this the solution then?

TOPCOUNT(EXISTING [Customer].[Customer Type-Name-Door Hierarchy].[Customer Name].members, 15, [Measures].[Net Ship Dollars])

or is there another way?

Also, how do you get it to sort correctly in excel, if you pull over the named set it just shows you the top X sorted by the SET Expression, whereas if you do an MDX query it sorts it by the Numeric Expression

Named set is not working in excel

Hi All,

I have created the named set to get the top 4 referers for my products.

But it is not working as expected.I am using Ecel 2007 as reporting UI using Pivot tables.

The referers are in rows and product is in filter.

Say I want the top referers (google.com,altavista.com...etc) for VB (or) VC++ or SQL 2005 ....etc

Please suggest me how I can do this i.e arrange in order and vary with change of product.

I have three tables Dim_Product, Dim_Referer, Fact table

The content of this new named set would be:

{([Dim Referer].[name category].Members,4,[Measures].[value])}

Rgds

Sai

Named sets created in the MDX Script are static - they are evaluated only once. Therefore changing the current product won't affect the content of the named set.sql

N - curious?

Looking at an if exists statement created by SQL Enterprise Manager such as:
if exists (select * from dbo.sysobjects where id =
object_id(N'[dbo].[DeleteAllData]') and OBJECTPROPERTY(id, N'IsProcedure') =
1), what does the N do? I've seen cases where it is and isn't necessary, but
I cannot find documentation telling what it does. "N" is a very ineffective
search!!!The N represents a Unicode string.

MySQL VS SQL Server

I introduced our organization to SQL Server about 5 years
ago and we have created a lot of applications around it.
My management is beginning to think that maybe we should
be switching over to MySQL, primarily because of (CPU)
costs.
I am not for a switch and would rather stay in SQL
Server. Does anyone have any knowledge of what SQL Server
can do that MySQL cannot?
Thanks

MySql is really not a comparable product to Sql Server.
SqlServer, like Oralce, DB2 and PostgreSQL is designed to be an enterprise
RDBMS server. This means that there is a server process which handles
management of the data, clients have no direct access to the data store. It
supports ACID transactions, online backup and recovery, declarative
referential integrity, etc.
MySql is an ISAM RDBMS. Architecturally MySql is more comparable to Access
or FoxPro than Sql Server. As such it is perfectly suitable for many
applications, but it is not designed to support large numbers of network
clients, and not a safe place to keep mission-critical enterprise data.
So if you are looking for a free alternative to Sql Server, you might check
out PostgreSQL instead.
David|||I have no idea how they compare on technical capabilities because I'm not
familiar with MySQL.
I would have thought that the biggest thing in SQLServer's favour (or not -
depending on your point-of-view!) is its dominance on the Windows platform.
The size and growth of its installed base means there is, and should be for
the forseeable future, a vast pool of IT professionals with SQLServer
skills, plus wide availability of support and third-party products.
But I would suggest you look objectively at which product makes sense for
your organisation without pre-conceived ideas. Maybe "they" are right. Why
not propose a technical evaluation of MySQL alongside SQLServer? That way
you get the chance to develop some skills in another product as well.
Hope this helps.

G'day Russ,
Hopefully you'll get some good performance and stability related answers
from others here.
From the perspective of a developer, I've found that MySQL does not yet
support two basic features that I rely on in my software designs.
Stored Procedures:
absolutely essential for partitioning the database code from the
application code, allowing better database management, simplified
deployment of database changes, and localisation of complex
multi-statement atomic actions at the server. Putting complex SQL code
into the client or middle tier is for rapid prototyping only, not robust
production systems, IMHO.
Column Constraints:
I don't like leaving things to chance, and trust the "application code"
to keep the data within the correct ranges. Being able to constrain the
values of a column is essential IMHO. I guess you could kludge this one
with foreign key constraints referencing lookup tables, but why when you
can just use a real RDBMS in the first place?

I guess you forgot about:
'InnoDB is a MySQL table type which provides transactions, row-level
locking,
non-locking consistent SELECT (multiversioned concurrency control), foreign
key constraints, and a non-free hot backup tool for backing up InnoDB
tables.'
Since a stable MySql 4.x.x and a stable MaxDB will be available
way before a RTM of Yukon, I suggest you do some more homework.

I sure do. My impression, though, is that PostgreSQL is a lot farther down
the road already.

I absolutely wish them luck, but the lack of SPs is still killer, and
what kind(s) of locking do they provide?
Have they learned to keep statistics and optimize queries, yet? Do
the transactions work, and what do they cost in performance? Have
they learned to do subqueries?
MySQL has been up to now a nice, fast, low-function product. It's a
whole different animal, competing with SQLServer. I'd love it if they
could do so, I'm happy when anybody can press Microsoft on any product
at the same or better price/value levels, but it's tough!

Yes, in many ways they are.(But I can't understand why they don't
have a native windows version:).But I believe in the short run they
will be eclipsed by a feature richer MySql/MaxDB.
As for a current snapshot Oracle and DB2 are much further down
the road than server:~).

My Table that uses aspnet foreign Keys wont display anything - CAUTION - Noob at work

I've created a new table in ASPNETDB.mdf called 'customerInfo'. Most of the fields are, for the moment, data that exists in one of the existing ASPNET tables eg Membership_UserId (primary key), Membership_Email, Users_UserName etc.; the list goes on. I have put a new column 'amountspent' - just to test that I can do what I think I can do, however the table doesn't display any data. Am I OK in thinking that I can use the aspnet data in my own tables and reference through foreign keys to them. I've made sure that the procedure that I used to put the table into a gridview on the webpage is OK as I did the same thing to the membership table and that displays all of its data. Can someone either explain the steps I need to make this happen correctly or point me in the direction of a noob type walkthrough.

Thanks

ps I've used several different ways to link the tables. First I tried building the relationships through the SqlMembershipProvider, created tables and added the foreign keys. Not sure of whether I'd done this correctly, I then used the diagram method which is pretty straightforward, however the result is the same. Surely now these tables are keyed to the UserId of aspnet_Users they should build and display a table of my existing test membership - even if the other fields, for the moment, are not carrying any data?

My Table Is Empty

I just created a new report and the table header is visible, as is the
first column, but all of the other columns are blank. The first column
has a product name, and the others have sales data, etc.
I can run the query from the data tab in VS, and it works fine. But
the preview and live version both have blank values in the main part of
hte table.
Why?Hi,
Have you checked the mapping of your query columns with the dataset return
values? Press Ctrl+Alt+D to make then visible if they aren't.

'My Reports' folder not being created for some users

Hi,
I was just nosing around the DB, and I noticed that all the users are in the
'users' table, but the user accounts don't appear in the 'PolicyUserRole'
table, and hence there are not any policies for them.
I don't know if this helps any or just confuses...
And there aren't any application events in the log on the server, either.

Thanks for the reply but if the user can't see the folder, how can they
browse to it? As is explained further on in the text, some users seem to
get them created automatically, while others don't. So I need either a way
to create the folder manually (some SQL?) or an explanation of the user
differences as to why a folder would be created for one user but not for
another...
Thanks,
Lance

'My Reports', even if it has not been created for that user. That is why it
will show up in Report Manager. The first time a user calls any soap method
that uses the My Reports folder, RS will create the corresponding folder in
the user directory that the My Reports folder points to. If you have each
user just call ListChildren on '/My Reports' then each user will have the
'My Reports' folder created.

Thanks for the reply, but I don't understand how to get each user to call
this method...
** a few minutes pass ...**
Ok, here is what I did to get it to work:
I logged in as a user that had a working 'My Reports' folder
I copied the URL
(http://webstats.co.uk/Reports/Pages/Folder.aspx?ItemPath=%2fMy+Reports&IsDe
tailsView=False)
I then logged in as a user that was having a problem
I then pasted the preceeding URL and loaded it.
Then using the admin user, put some reports into the 'My Reports' folder of
the problem user.
And, voila! Now they have their own 'My Reports' folder! Woo hoo!
Thanks for the help,
Lance

My questions

I'm new for ssas and I'm studying NS samples,i found all the subscribers and subscriptions are created manully,my app have millions of subscribers and many different kinds of subscriptions,so how to create those objects through reading data from tables?

Much appreciate for your reply

In SSNS 2000, subscribers, devices, and subscriptions have to be created using the SSNS API using a programming language like C#, VB.NET, or VBScript. In SSNS 2005, we know have some views that can be used to create those rows in the database.

Here are a couple of links that may help.

My package does not take the values configured in the configuration file.

Hi all,

I created a simple file system task to copy a file from one location to another on my local system.

I used variables to specify the source and destination paths and now in my configuration file if I configure the values to something else also the package is taking the initial default values and not the values specified in the configuration file.

Can anyone throw some light on this.

Thanks in advance.

first of all check that u are using configutaion file in your package correclty

second check that variable is being mapped (present) in your configuration

these are all i can assume from ur explained scenario

write back to me if u find ne luck

regards,

Anas

My Own - Multi Select Parameter Passing Implementation

Hi,
I would like to share how I implemented in my application by passing multi
select parameters into the report.
1. In my .net file, I have created a list box which I load all the multi
values that the user wants to report on(for Ex: Equipment Id = 100,200,300,400 and so on).
2. When the user submits the page, I load the above list into a table.
3. In my stored procedure, I go after this table and build the SELECT
statement.
4. Since the report has to refreshed everytime they add another value into
the list, the report has to know that it has to refresh. For this what I have
done is on the table that i load all the values, I extract the SEQUENCE # and
pass it to the report(it is a unique # everytime when you refresh the page).
U can also pass a Random # but the uniqueness is not guaranteed and the
report may not refresh.
In the Report Designer:
1. I create a parameter called RefreshReport. This value that gets passed
into the parameter is the SEQUENCE value.
I poured my head into 3 books for some clue and couldn't find one hint.
I will be more than happy to answer any questions regarding this
implementation..hi, can you be more detailing? I've been following a guide from a book,
there's this query:
="SELECT * FROM vProductProfitability WHERE (Year = @.Year) AND (Mon
thNumberOfYear = @.Month) AND (Category IN (â'+Parameters!CategoryStrin
g.Value+â'))â'
yes, like what you said, you created a new parameter, in here, the the param
is category string, I dn't know where to put this query since i'm using a
stored procedure.. the only way we can use this query is by using text, so
about your stored procedure that you changed.. what is it?
what i can still select is 1 item, although i'm using checkboxlist, i can
select all of them, but w/ an error of course.
can you please discuss how you manage to enable multi select, since you've
posted a helping memo in here already.. advance thanks!
